A New Chapter Woven—The Angels' Share Tartan Returns in 16oz Heavyweight Strome

It’s been nearly nine years since the first ever bolt of Angels' Share tartan came to life — a symbolic and spiritual cloth I created to honour the ethereal element of Scotch whisky known as the Angels' Share.

That first run was woven on the Isle of Bute, using a 13oz medium-weight wool. It marked the beginning of a journey that would take this tartan into the hands, hearts, and wardrobes of whisky lovers across the world.

Today, I’m proud to announce something very special.

The Angels' Share® tartan has now been re-woven in Lochcarron of Scotland's renowned 16oz Strome heavyweight worsted wool — an exceptional cloth, made from 100% pure new wool sourced from Scottish-bred sheep, spun, dyed, and woven entirely in Scotland.

This new edition continues our connection to the most traditional roots of Scottish textile production.

Why 16oz Strome? Why Lochcarron?

For this new production, I wanted the Angels' Share tartan to embrace another aspect of Scottish weaving heritage. The Strome cloth from Lochcarron of Scotland is respected for its durability, remarkable drape, and authenticity. The wool comes from local flocks, making it a true reflection of Scotland’s natural heritage.

This heavier 16oz weave lends the tartan a purposeful strength, with a graceful drape and clean lines that embody its rich heritage.

I believe this is the Angels' Share matured — offering a different, deeper expression of its form and finish.

Seven Colours. One Story.

The tartan remains unchanged in its design. Seven symbolic colours still dance together in the cloth:

  • AMBER
    — symbolising the spirit itself (…and 40% proof)

  • OCHRE
    — representing fermenting yeast

  • BROWN
    — evoking the oak casks

  • BLUE
    — for the pure Scottish water

  • INDIGO
    — recalling the coal that fires the stills

  • YELLOW
    — the richness of ripened barley

  • WHITE
    — the angels taking their share

Woven now in a new light, these colours take on a fresh resonance. The depth of Lochcarron's Strome cloth gives the tartan a visual strength and warmth that is distinct from the 13oz version.

What Does This Mean for You?

The new 16oz Angels' Share tartan is now available for all new kilts, plaids, and accessories commissioned through me, Steven Patrick Sim, The Tartan Artisan®.

Each item crafted from this new cloth will carry not only the story of the angels, but also the integrity of a weave made entirely in Scotland from Scottish wool.

If you own a garment in the original 13oz, your kilt is part of the tartan’s legacy—woven into the very beginnings of this story. The new weave marks the next chapter, a matured continuation of the same celestial inspiration.

A Word on Availability

This cloth is limited. Like a fine cask laid down to mature, each bolt is woven in small quantities, and kilts are made on a first-come, first-served basis. When the cloth runs out, production will pause until a new batch is justified by demand.

So if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to own a piece of the Angels' Share story — this is it! Please place your order at your soonest opportunity.

A Closing Reflection

From the first inspiration, this design has sought to capture the spirit that rises from every cask of Scotch. It’s a tribute to tradition, to the soul of the craft, and to the invisible.

With this new heavyweight weave, that spirit is now woven with renewed strength.

You too, can now experience ...the matured Angels’ Share!
