A Fine-Art limited-edition print—from the Tartan250 Heritage Collection.
Commemorating 250 Years of American Independence
Designed in Arbroath, Scotland (birthplace of the Declaration of Arbroath) and fulfilled in the United States for U.S. orders, this collectible fine-art print weaves the anthem’s opening verse into a timeless tartan inspired by the storied 1814 garrison flag.
The Tartan250 PAST Edition—is a historic tartan tribute, an exclusive “tartan for the clans” of the original Union of States. It honors the earliest fight for liberty in a time-faded salute. Produced with archival materials and museum-quality craftsmanship, each print is individually numbered and certified for lasting authenticity. For those who appreciate the ongoing spirit of freedom, explore the PRESENT Edition, which carries this enduring spirit into the heart of modern America today.
Echoes of Fort McHenry—1814
In commemoration of the United States Semiquincentennial Year, this unframed edition reimagines the original 15-star, 15-stripe garrison flag—the very emblem that inspired Francis Scott Key’s timeless anthem. Woven as a variant of the official tartan design by Scottish artist Steven Patrick Sim—the Tartan Artisan, it is proudly registered as Tartan #13214—the officially registered “Star-Spangled Banner (Flag of 1814)."
Time‑Worn Colors of Courage
Faded NAVY, EMBER‑REDS, and softened IVORY tones evoke two centuries of enduring history.
-
Broad EMBER-RED and IVORY bands, composed with a 13-thread count, pay tribute to the founding colonies.
-
15 BLUE and 15 RED threads represent the stars and stripes of the original historic banner.
-
Smoke‑hazed WHITE pivots in the BLUE-SHADED canton suggest stars flickering through a smoky night sky, while the tartan’s weave captures the fiery rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting over Fort McHenry.
Time-softened NAVY, EMBERED-REDS, and muted IVORY hues quietly evoke the enduring spirit of a young nation forged through struggle and resilience—a woven reflection of history’s steadfast heart.
The design thus honours the anthem’s origins—threaded through history, reimagined in cloth.
Permission Granted
The creation of the Star-Spangled Banner (Flag of 1814) tartan was only made possible through securing formal permission from the Smithsonian Institution—stewards of the original flag in Washington, D.C. Beginning in 2020, this vital process involved many months of thoughtful correspondence, careful review, and due diligence. Filled with anticipation and passion, each exchange reflected the deep historical significance of the flag. Finally, in April 2021, the Smithsonian formally granted permission to register and name the tartan.
This milestone marked the culmination of a determined journey, and on 4th July 2021—fittingly, Independence Day—the tartan was officially entered into the Scottish Register of Tartans. This permission pertained solely to registration and does not imply endorsement by the Smithsonian Institution.
For those interested in a contemporary interpretation, the PRESENT Edition features a vibrant palette inspired by the living flag of today. Click through to explore the modern colors and symbolism woven into the latest tartan design.
A Son of Liberty
Born in the shadow of Arbroath Abbey—where freedom was first declared—this tartan reaches across the Atlantic to honor America’s enduring stand for liberty.
