The Declaration of Arbroath — in gold metallic light

The Declaration of Arbroath was sent to Pope John XXII in 1320 and remains one of Scotland’s most powerful historical documents. This fine-art edition was created to honour the 700th anniversary year and to present the manuscript with an almost illuminated, gold-leaf character.

The famous passage represented in the artwork includes the words:

“...for, as long as a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be subjected to the lordship of the English. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.”

The metallic print surface responds beautifully to careful lighting. In suitable surroundings, the manuscript glows warmly while the remaining seal details catch the light like deep emeralds and rubies.

Why choose Pewter?

The Pewter edition is the most balanced version of the Declaration Gold series. It gives the ancient manuscript a silvery, reflective setting that feels calm, serious and refined, allowing the gold manuscript surface and coloured seals to sit in harmony rather than high drama.

  • Balanced metallic tone: ideal for collectors who want a refined, adaptable presentation
  • Silvery Pewter character: a cooler and more neutral setting than Pearl, softer and less dramatic than Black Onyx
  • Gold manuscript effect: the reflective metallic print surface gives the artwork a luminous, ceremonial quality
  • Elegant room presence: particularly effective in classic, contemporary or heritage interiors

The Pewter edition is the one to choose if you want the Declaration to feel balanced, dignified and quietly luminous.

Fine-art metallic print process

This edition is produced as a digital chromogenic / C-Type metallic photographic print. The image is exposed onto Fuji Pearl Premier Metallic paper using a professional light-jet process, then chemically developed as a continuous-tone photographic print.

  • Metallic photographic surface: gives the manuscript a rich gold luminosity
  • Silver halide photographic process: a true photographic print rather than a standard poster print
  • Rigid mounted finish: the print is dry mounted to a flat rigid panel using archival, pH-neutral adhesive before framing
  • Designed for longevity: best displayed away from strong sunlight, high humidity, excess heat and atmospheric pollutants

In suitable display conditions, the print is intended as a long-lasting fine-art object, with the metallic surface giving the manuscript its distinctive illuminated character.

Framing, glass and presentation

The Pewter edition is supplied professionally mounted and framed in a satin black wooden frame. It is presented under premium reflection-control glass, chosen to reduce glare while preserving a clear view of the metallic print.

  • Framed finish: black wooden frame with complementary mount
  • Reflection-control glass: premium glass with very low reflection and no visible image distortion
  • Saltire Blue effect: the glass can sometimes create a subtle blue optical character, a natural quality of this specialist glazing
  • Ready for display: supplied as a completed framed piece rather than a loose print

Important: these editions are produced with glass. Non-breakable acrylic glazing is not currently offered for this Declaration Gold framed edition.

Framed glass artworks are handled carefully. Eligible local/regional delivery appears at checkout; other delivery arrangements are quoted individually.

Certificate, hologram and booklet

Each framed edition is certified and supplied with supporting material for provenance and safe record-keeping.

  • Numbered certificate: confirms the edition and number
  • Serialised hologram: appears on the certificate and on the reverse of the framed artwork
  • Twenty-page booklet: includes the complete Declaration of Arbroath text in English and Latin, information on the seals and supporting historical notes
  • Black string-and-washer envelope: supplied for the certificate and booklet

Choosing a number: you may request a preferred edition number in the order notes at checkout. Specific numbers are subject to availability. If no number is requested, your piece will be issued with the lowest available number.
