The Declaration of Arbroath — in gold metallic light
The Declaration of Arbroath was sent to Pope John XXII in 1320 and remains one of Scotland’s most powerful historical documents. This fine-art edition was created to honour the 700th anniversary year and to present the manuscript with an almost illuminated, gold-leaf character.
The famous passage represented in the artwork includes the words:
“...for, as long as a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be subjected to the lordship of the English. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.”
The metallic print surface responds beautifully to careful lighting. In suitable surroundings, the manuscript glows warmly while the remaining seal details catch the light like deep emeralds and rubies.
Why choose Black Onyx?
The Black Onyx edition is the strongest, deepest and most contrasted version of the Declaration Gold series. It places the ancient manuscript against a jet-black onyx-style panel, creating a striking visual tension between darkness, gold light and the coloured seals.
- Most dramatic contrast: ideal for collectors who want a bold, gallery-like statement piece
- Dark presentation: black onyx panel, complementary dark mount and satin black frame
- Gold manuscript effect: the reflective metallic print surface gives the artwork a luminous, ceremonial quality
- Strong room presence: particularly effective under controlled lighting or directional spotlights
The Black Onyx edition is the one to choose if you want the Declaration to feel dramatic, formal and unmistakably ceremonial.

Fine-art metallic print process
This edition is produced as a digital chromogenic / C-Type metallic photographic print. The image is exposed onto Fuji Pearl Premier Metallic paper using a professional light-jet process, then chemically developed as a continuous-tone photographic print.
- Metallic photographic surface: gives the manuscript a rich gold luminosity
- Silver halide photographic process: a true photographic print rather than a standard poster print
- Rigid mounted finish: the print is dry mounted to a flat rigid panel using archival, pH-neutral adhesive before framing
- Designed for longevity: best displayed away from strong sunlight, high humidity, excess heat and atmospheric pollutants
In suitable display conditions, the print is intended as a long-lasting collector piece. The metallic surface is especially rewarding when lit with care.
Framing, glass and presentation
Each Black Onyx edition is supplied framed, with a complementary mount and satin black wooden frame. The artwork is displayed under premium reflection-control glass.
- Frame: classic black wooden frame with satin black finish
- Mount: complementary dark mount chosen to suit the Black Onyx presentation
- Glass: premium reflection-control glass only; acrylic glazing is not currently offered for this edition
- Visual note: the specialist glass can occasionally create a subtle blue optical effect in certain lighting, which is a natural characteristic of this type of glazing
Framed glass artworks are handled carefully. Eligible local/regional delivery appears at checkout; other delivery arrangements are quoted individually.
