Earthrise Kilt – 16oz Heavyweight
Pleated to the Dark Void of Space
A Tribute to Our Blue Planet
The Earthrise Kilt—(made from the official Earthrise Tartan®) registered design #10983 by Steven Patrick Sim, The Tartan Artisan®—commemorates Apollo 8’s 1968 Earthrise photograph, hailed as "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken."
Tailored from premium 16oz kilt-weight wool from Marton Mills—one of the UK's foremost tartan weavers trusted for heavyweight quality—this dynamic pleat-to-stripe construction creates a stunning special effect. The Earth pivot 'rises and sets' within the black military stripes (when the kilt pleats move) symbolising the dark void of space.
Each kilt is traditionally cut from 8 yards of cloth, the drop finished with a tucked selvedge, and your choice of - triple - or single - fringed apron—the triple fringe option paying tribute to Apollo 8’s three astronauts.
Why Pleat to the Dark Void?
Pleating to the black military stripe—representing the infinite vastness of outer space—creates the most striking Earthrise effect. The blue and white of Earth appear to rise and set as the wearer moves.
• Sett continuity from waist to hem in the front apron
• Dynamic Earthrise motion in the pleats
• Perfect symmetry of commemorative geometry
Traditional sett pleating is also available—just let me know your preference with your measurements.
