Do I Need a Large-Size Kilt?
Selecting the right size for your bespoke Angels’ Share®, Earthrise or North Sea Oil Kilt is essential—not just for comfort and fit, but also for achieving the elegant silhouette that quality kilt tailoring provides. This guide will help you decide with confidence, especially if you’re considering the generous length option.

Understanding Kilt Sizing
Every kilt is custom-made to your exact measurements. In general I require three key measurements from you:
-
Kilt Waist – taken snugly at the navel, or slightly above
-
Hip Size – measured loosely at the widest point
-
Kilt Length – from the navel (kilt waist measurement position) down to the middle of the kneecap
Important: Your waist measurement will typically be larger than your hip measurement—this is perfectly normal (and necessary to produce the kilt). Please measure carefully, as custom-made kilts cannot be returned unless there is a defect. Each garment is crafted specifically to your supplied sizes.
Note: While these are the standard measurements, some styles—such as military kilts—may require a different length, often higher on the knee.
Traditional vs Generous Kilt Lengths
A traditional kilt (often called an 8-yard kilt) uses approximately:
-
3.7 metres
(12 feet 2 inches) of double-width tartan (typically 1.4m wide), sometimes carefully cut and invisibly seamed to achieve the ideal pleating.
For those requiring a roomier fit, I offer a generous kilt option, which uses:
-
4.2 metres
of double-width tartan
This allows for a fuller, more comfortable kilt with additional coverage and swing in the pleats—roughly equivalent to a 10-yard kilt in terms of cloth used.
Please note: Due to the extra fabric required, a £50 surcharge applies for the generous-size kilts. You’ll find a “48"+ Waist” selection option on the kilt product pages.
How to Submit Your Sizing
You can provide your kilt measurements in one of two ways:
-
Add them in the “Order Notes” section at checkout
-
Alternatively, email me at steve@thetartanartisan.com after placing your order, quoting your order number and providing the three measurements
If you’re unsure about anything, don’t worry—I’ll be happy to guide you once your order is placed.
