The Flag of Today — A Tribute in Tartan
In celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial Year, this unframed edition honors the modern Star-Spangled Banner — through the official tartan design created by Scottish artist Steven Patrick Sim. Registered at the Scottish Register of Tartans, Edinburgh, as — TARTAN #13214 — this artwork transforms the 50-star flag into a vibrant tribute woven from history and heritage.
Red, White & Blue — COLORS OF UNITY
STAR-WHITE pivots sparkle within luminous AZURE-BLUE and deep NAVY fields, recalling the 50 states. Inspired by the geometry of the U.S. flag, these elements are set alongside vibrant red grounds, with 13-count stripes alternating between bold SCARLET and pure WHITE — honoring the original thirteen colonies. All are held in the balanced symmetry of the sett. Together, these reds, blues, stars, and stripes embody the spirit of the United States flag — symbolizing unity and serving as a constellation of hope in the 21st century.

A closer look, at the weave and color...
- Bold SCARLET and BRIGHT IVORY bands, each composed with a 13-thread count, honor the original thirteen colonies with courage and purity.
- The deep NAVY field contains 50 threads, representing the unity and enduring strength of today’s fifty states.
- STAR-WHITE pivots shimmer within the luminous AZURE and deep NAVY fields, evoking the hope and vigilance that shine brightly over modern America.
The design honors the anthem’s enduring spirit — carried through history, reinterpreted in vibrant geometry for a united America today.
Permission Granted
The official registration of the Star-Spangled Banner (Flag of 1814) tartan was only made possible with permission being granted from the Smithsonian Institution — stewards of the original flag in Washington, D.C. Beginning in 2020, this process involved many months of thoughtful correspondence, careful review, and due diligence. Filled with hopeful anticipation, each exchange reflected the deep historical significance of the flag. Finally, in April 2021, the Smithsonian formally granted permission to register and name the tartan.
This milestone marked the culmination of a determined journey, and on July 4, 2021 — fittingly, Independence Day — the tartan was registered at the Scottish Register of Tartans.
This permission pertains solely to registration and does not imply endorsement by the Smithsonian Institution.
The LIVING FLAG
— 50 Stars, 13 Stripes
The gallery above opens in vibrant color, showcasing the living banner’s bold red, white, and blue — the proud colors of today’s U.S. flag. These hues, symbolizing valor, purity, and vigilance, are captured in the PRESENT Edition tartan, carrying freedom’s enduring spirit in every thread.
Timeworn artifacts recall the flag’s rich history and resilience. This contrast between the vibrant living flag and the aged relic is captured beautifully in the Star-Spangled Banner tartan’s timeless dual-design.
The last image shows the treasured Star-Spangled Banner, its authentic, faded colors preserved at the Smithsonian. While the image detail is enhanced for display, these heritage tones remain true to the flag’s enduring spirit. If those ancient shades speak to you, discover the — PAST Edition — a tartan designed to echo the flag as it endures in history.
Both the PRESENT and PAST Editions are also available as Framed Collector’s Prints — complete with a museum-quality oak-finish, ready to hang and preserve.
