The Angel in the Rain

 

The Angels’ Share® — Full‑Tartan Canopy Umbrella follows the same design journey as my kilts and fine art prints, translating the artwork from the original 16oz Strome‑weight woven cloth into something made for real weather — the kind we actually live in.

While working with the tartan, one pivot in the sett kept catching my eye — a quiet balance of light, colour, and form within a single square of the weave.

I ended up photographing that very detail and turning it into a repeatable motif, and from that small piece of geometry came the canopy you see here — not a digital substitute, but a continuation of the original cloth.

That moment stayed with me. In the thick of another downpour in Scotland at the end of January 2026, as Storm Chandra rolled through and the sky turned wild once more, the idea of an umbrella built from that pivot began to feel like something that had been waiting to happen. It became a way to offer shelter that still belongs to the same world as the Angels’ Share tartan — shaped by light, whisky, and oak, but now made for life lived outdoors, rain or shine.

In this version, the tartan runs all the way around the umbrella across all eight panels, so it feels classic and unmistakably “tartan” from every angle. Because each panel shares the same central pivot, you get a complete circle of the design — a quiet band of angelic pivots overhead, 360 degrees, moving with you through the rain.

At the crown, a smokey oak fade gently softens the design at the very top, deepening the overall feel of the umbrella. That oaky tone lifts the lighter threads below, so the pale golds and whites in the pivot catch the light and glow more vividly, almost ethereal. It’s subtle, but you notice it.

How the Light Moves

 

Printed on the bias, the gold, white, amber, wood‑brown, and blue tones of the tartan shift as the umbrella turns — like light moving through oak and spirit. The crown fade adds a deeper oak note at the very top, and that contrast can make the lighter pivots feel more “illuminated” when the canopy catches daylight.

 

Beneath the surface lies a functional build: a wind‑resistant canopy in recycled performance fabric, eight panels, and a strong frame built for real Scottish weather. Designed in Scotland and made in the UK, it’s meant to be carried often — through city streets, along the coast, on the green, or on the school run when the sky turns.

Choosing Your Umbrella Style

 

The Angels’ Share Full-Tartan Canopy design is offered here in three styles, all using the same plaid artwork applied across eight panels:

 

City Umbrella — Brown Handle
Classic crook handle in a warm brown (natural) finish with automatic open and a reassuring top lock. A good everyday choice if you like a traditional silhouette with a softer, whisky-oak feel in the handle.

City Umbrella — Black Handle
The same frame and canopy as the brown version, but with a black crook handle for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Suits darker outerwear, tailoring, and anyone who prefers a more understated handle.

Golf Umbrella
A larger, 2‑person canopy with auto‑open function, soft‑touch handle and rubberised tip — ideal for open spaces, events, or simply when you like more room under the canopy. The tartan reads beautifully at this scale, with the oak crown gathering neatly at the top.

 

Each style carries the same authentic Angels’ Share artwork around all eight panels — full tartan coverage all the way around, finished with its warm crown fade to deepen the top of the canopy.

This is the most familiar, easy-going build, with a comfortable crook handle and an automatic open so you can get the canopy up quickly when the rain starts.

The brown handle sits naturally with the oak crown fade, creating a soft, continuous warmth that runs from the top of the canopy through the tartan to the grip. The gallery below shows the umbrella from outside and underneath, including close-ups of the tartan detail and how the pivotal “angels” read when the canopy is open.

The Tartan Behind the Canopy

 

The Angels’ Share® Tartan was woven as a 16oz Strome‑weight cloth to honour Scotland’s national drink and the quiet loss of spirit during maturation. Within the weave, subtle, almost ethereal shapes began to appear — an unexpected presence, the “angels in the weave,” revealing themselves only once the fabric came to life on the loom.

The umbrella canopy is built directly from that same artwork, taken from the original woven pivot rather than a digital imitation. It’s simply another way to carry that story — lifted from the kilt and the studio and brought out into the weather, where, truth be told, most Scots spend a good part of their lives.

Designed in Scotland and handmade in the UK, the Angels’ Share® Tartan Umbrella keeps the same spirit alive — honest, useful, and made to last. 😇
