The creation of the Star-Spangled Banner (Flag of 1814) tartan was only made possible through securing formal permission from the Smithsonian Institution—stewards of the original flag in Washington, D.C. Beginning in 2020, this vital process involved many months of thoughtful correspondence, careful review, and due diligence. Filled with anticipation and passion, each exchange reflected the deep historical significance of the flag. Finally, in April 2021, the Smithsonian formally granted permission to register and name the tartan.

This milestone marked the culmination of a determined journey, and on July 4, 2021—fittingly, Independence Day—the tartan was officially entered into the Scottish Register of Tartans.

ECHOES of Fort McHenry

In tribute to the United States Semiquincentennial Year, this framed PAST edition presents the 1814 Star-Spangled Banner—created as a variant of the official tartan design by Scottish artist Steven Patrick Sim (registered as Tartan #13214).

Time‑faded navy, aged ivory, and ember‑red evoke the original Great Garrison Flag—its colors softened by time, its geometry recalling the 15 stars and 15 stripes that rallied a young republic through trial—and war. The broad red and ivory bars are set to a 13-thread count, each bearing the patina of age—a quiet testament to a nation finding its voice and standing firm in its ideals.

The blue canton’s aged-white sparkles suggest stars in a smoky night sky, while broad red and ivory bands within the sett recall the fiery trails of rockets over the fort—the drama of battle embedded in the weave.
