North Sea Oil Tartan

The Rationale...

Registered at the Scottish Register of Tartans
Reference: No. #10766
Designer: Sim, Steven Patrick
Tartan Date: 16/09/2009
Registration Date: 16 January 2013
Category: Commemorative

The North Sea Oil tartan pays tribute to one of Scotland’s greatest modern industries — recognising both the immense economic value of Scotland’s “black gold” and the personal sacrifices made by those working in hazardous offshore environments.

The design honours Brendan McKeown OBE (1925–2011), who famously brought ashore the UK’s first sample of North Sea oil on 16th September 1969 — a moment that marked a turning point in Scotland’s industrial story. The tartan was formally registered on the 45th anniversary of that discovery, in 2014.

At its heart is the ‘Flame of Remembrance’ — a motif originally inspired by the glowing flare booms of offshore oil rigs, capturing the light and energy of the North Sea horizon. Yet woven within its symbolism is a quiet thread of remembrance, respectfully acknowledging the human cost of offshore labour.

Other elements of the design represent oil fields, gas exploration, and the city of Aberdeen, known globally as the Oil Capital of Europe.

Colours in the tartan:

  • Black, brown, and gold reflect the hues of raw crude oil, with gold also nodding to the burning flare stacks

  • Blue Shades symbolise the North Sea and gas industry

  • Grey tones depict the sedimentary sea bed, and include subtle references to Aberdeen’s coat of arms

WHY PLEATED TO THE FLAME?

Pleating to the ‘Flame of Remembrance’ draws on the glowing flare boom — a beacon of light and energy that defines the North Sea’s offshore horizon.

Originally inspired by these iconic flare towers, the flame motif reflects the power, resilience, and enduring spirit of Scotland’s offshore workforce. Yet beyond its industrial symbolism, the design carries a quiet undercurrent of remembrance — a subtle honouring of the lives lost in hazardous offshore environments. Among these, it also respectfully acknowledges Piper Alpha (1988) — the world’s deadliest offshore disaster — where 167 men tragically lost their lives in a single night that forever changed the industry.

If you'd prefer pleated to the sett, simply request this with your measurements.

Thank you for supporting my work to bring Scotland’s stories to life through tartan.

Warmest regards,
Stevie – The Tartan Artisan®, SCOTLAND

A wee note regarding the colour shades of the new 16oz 2023 weave

Some images on this page may show the earlier 13oz version of the North Sea Oil kilt.

The updated 16oz edition features a traditional tucked selvedge finish, brighter flame tones, and a shade lighter blue/grey in the blue fields — creating a more vibrant and dynamic visual impact in the tartan ...and the kilt.

The following four images are taken from the actual 16oz woven tartan:
