Launching Soon! EARTHRISE 2.0!

So, I’m back! …with a growing range of products featuring the Earthrise tartan! I can’t believe it was originally registered at the Scottish Register of Tartans way back in 2013, which was the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, and of course when the iconic and world famous ‘EARTHRISE’ image was captured - Christmas Eve 1968.

The tartan has seen itself woven a few times since then, and I will weave it again! It has proved to be a very popular design, and the demand for Earthrise as products has been very encouraging …in fact at times overwhelming!

After a slowdown of my business over the two years or so of the pandemic, and some other personal matters behind the scenes, two events - one occurring recently - and one occurring imminently… have influenced me, to relaunch Earthrise.

- - -

Firstly …My dear mother, and popular Scottish Artist - Sheena Christie - sadly passed away recently, after an extended period of illness. Her loss hit me hard as she was a wonderful mum, much loved and very talented. She inspired me to follow my dreams… and find my art …and tartan! So, since her passing I have been in a gloomy place, needing something to move me, and inspire me to ‘rise’ again …so to speak, and engage once more with my loyal customer base. Whom I fear I have neglected over the past few years. And I must apologise for that.

[I also created a tartan for my mum, and I will post separately about that].

Secondly …Artemis!

Yes! Of course! …now is the time to relaunch Earthrise, the tartan. How could I not? I foresee, soon, Earthrise 2.0! NASA has to take another photo! ? …don’t you think? A new spaceflight program launches… and new manned missions to the moon! How exciting is that! I was born in 1969, so the Apollo missions - I think - influenced me from infancy! I was 3 when the last Apollo mission took place in 1972. The stunning portrait of our planet - Earthrise - is more relevant now than ever!

EARTHRISE - Described by nature photographer Galen Rowell as “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.”

So that all said, in the dark shadow of my grief, I can now see a glimmer of light (Earthlight?), and I now see it is time for me to move on. That’s what my mother would have wanted! So I’m moving forward with my plan to start releasing products - which are printed on demand and drop-shipped. I’ve been looking for a way to do this - and a suitable sustainable and green friendly fulfilment partner - for a number of years. Now I believe I have found that print partner, who has just recently raised their game, to one I believe matches my vision of only selling high quality products ...featuring my original tartans.

For full transparency, my print partner is not located in Scotland, but they are a long established UK based company, aiming to be a higher quality producer of 'made to order goods'. So, yes, the majority of their goods are hand-made, here in the UK ...sustainably.

I have decided to follow this path for my business, as this will allow me to more easily offer my tartan designs on an expanding range of products - for my customers - without the high up-front costs (and friction) of ONLY offering manufactured goods from woven tartans and fabrics, made here in Scotland. To date I have not found a Scottish based company that offers me a comparable custom-made drop-shipping service.

So, now moving forward, I'm excited to now design and make available many more offerings with my tartan creations, without the friction I have experienced focusing on mainly traditional woven highland products. I must do this as I now have approx 50 tartan designs (original patterns & their variants)… impossible for a small independent sole trader to bring to market, in the traditional sense only.

So I will start, with Earthrise… and in time further add more of my designs, plus many more new tartans not yet revealed.

That said, my heart will always be in Scotland, and I love tartan. I will still want to weave my tartans, and make these available, as traditional products. I’m also re-considering that I might license my designs to businesses - worldwide - in order to open up the potential reach for my creativity (as highland goods). So moving forward, every made to order printed product sold will help support my small Scottish business, as it grows, and more importantly further allow me to invest in future weaves, and the woven cloth ...and all the amazing things that comes from that.

So, 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… !

Now ready to launch! [ ...ie when Artemis eventually takes off! 😊 ]
…boom!!

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the Earth,” Anders read. Borman ended the passage, adding “and from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you—all of you on the good Earth.”
